50 years. 50 years is how long fans of the Kansas City Chiefs have been waiting for a Super Bowl appearance. It was the longest drought in the NFL in terms of years between appearances. The 49ers on the other hand only had to wait 7 years for another Super Bowl appearance. Super Bowl LIV is simply a tale of two different franchises.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs were formed in 1960 and since then have won 3 NFL Championships and 1 Super Bowl. All of those came before the year 1970. Since then the Chiefs have not even appeared in a Super Bowl. This is a fanbase that is starved for a championship. They finally have a superstar, face of the franchise guy in Patrick Mahomes, and it seems like he has all the pieces around him to finally make that happen.
The defense is really clicking on all cylinders and they may have the best defensive player on the planet right now in Tyrann Mathieu. They held Derrick Henry to 69 yards rushing (although that has a lot to do with game script), and they are making enough plays to allow the offense to do their thing.
After a heartbreaking loss last year, the Chiefs finally got it done on Championship Sunday.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers only have to go back 7 years to remember their last Super Bowl appearance. They may just want to forget it though. After Jacoby Jones returned the 2nd half kickoff for a TD the 49ers trailed 28-6. They did stage a comeback after the “blackout”, but eventually wound up falling short.
This is a franchise though that is no stranger to greatness. They ave 5 Super Bowl victories in their history and claim two of the greatest players the NFL has ever seen. Jerry Rice is the unquestionable WR GOAT, while Montana is included in every single QB GOAT conversation.
This is a franchise where greatness was the standard for so long, and understandably so. After a few years of futility, it seems like John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan, and company have this franchise back where they belong.
The line opened up at -1.5 in favor of KC with the over/under at 53.5. Right now my gut is telling me KC is going to win and they are going to smash this over.
I will get out a full gambling guide and game preview later in the week.
We have 2 weeks left until the last NFL game of the year, so do not take it for granted. Let’s enjoy it while we have it!
