In another week highlighted by big upsets and bad officiating, the Heisman candidates all came to fucking play. We now have a defensive player right in the thick of the conversation after a huge performance in a big game. The RBs in the mix have completely shuffled over the last 2 weeks while the 3 QBs who have been the favorites since day 1 all remain the favorites to make the trip to NY.
1-Joe Burrow-205/260 Passing (78.8%), 2,805 Yards, 30 TDs, 4 Ints, 3 Rushing TDs-Joe Burrow is not only solidifying himself as the Heisman favorite, but he is also solidifying his status as a 1st round draft prospect. He is fucking incredible and has been all season long. He makes all the right throws and puts them in a place where only his WR is going to catch it. He is on pace to break the single season record for completion percentage as well as almost every single SEC QB record. He has the Tigers at #1 in the AP Poll and right in the middle of the CFB Playoff conversation. They are the only team this year to beat 3 top 10 teams (opponents ranked in the top 10 when they played them). I feel like this is his trophy to lose with Alabama coming up and then possibly the SEC Championship game. If he stays this consistent through the end of the season and LSU runs the table, it would be hard to make an argument against him winning.
2-Jalen Hurts-133/180 Passing, 2,469 Yards, 21 TDs, 3 Ints, 801 Rushing Yards, 13 TDs-Jalen Hurts is a bad fucking man! Right now, the biggest thing working against him is that OU got upset this weekend by K-State. Now there have been players to win the Heisman while losing a couple of games, but those guys had to horribly outplay the other finalists to win the award. Jalen Hurts is in this race with 3 guys who are all on undefeated teams and they are all putting up similar stats. He has been inrediblethis year, but in order for him to beat the other guys out, he is going to have to go batshit over the next couple of weeks. If you have watched Jalen play, you know that this is definitely a possibility though.
3-Chase Young-22 Solo Tackles, 7 Assists, 13.5 Sacks, 5 Forced Fumbles, 1 Pass Defensed-I was a complete dumbass for leaving Chase out of my rankings last week. Go ahead shit on me all you want, but defensive players need huge games on huge platforms to even enter the conversation. Well Chase Young did just that this weekend against Wisconsin. Even though the Badgers lost to Illinois last week, this was one of marquee matchups of the season and Chase did not disappoint. He totaled 4 sacks and 5 TFLs and showed the whole country that he really is the best football player in College Football. He is only 2.5 sacks away from the Big 10 record for sacks in a season and he more than likely has at least 6 games left! With a game against undefeated Penn State and probably the B1G Championship game left, he will have plenty of chances to break the record and make a real run at the Heisman.
4-Tua Tagovailoa-145/194 Passing, 2,156 Yards, 27 TDs, 2 Ints, 2 Rushing TDs-Even after missing a game and a half, Tua is right at the top of every statistical category for QBs in the country. He will have a chance to move up this list in two weeks when Bama takes on LSU. He will need to have a huge game for them to win and if he does, he may become the odds on favorite. I will say, it may have hurt him a bit that the Bama offense didn’t seem to miss a beat with Jones in there. They were still able to move the ball and score at will, but it was against Arkansas, so take that as you will. Tua, just like Burrow, should have plenty of chances to win this award in the coming weeks.
5-Justin Fields-128/186 Passing, 1,659 Yards, 24 TDs, 1 Int, 319 Rushing Yards, 9 TDs-Fields is the QB for the best team in the country and he is as efficient as it gets. He only has 1 pick so far and has done a great job taking care of the ball while going up against some of the country’s best defenses week in and week out. The duo of Fields and Dobbins makes for an almost unstoppable backfield and it has shown so far this season as they have combined for 18 rushing TDs this year. Fields is quite a ways behind the frontrunners for now, but he can make a move with some big games over the next 5 weeks.
Honorable Mentions (Still in the Hunt)
JK Dobbins-154 Rushes, 1,110 Yards, 7.2 YPC, 9 TDs, 132 Receiving Yards, 2 TDs
Justin Herbert-179/262 Passing, 2,104 Yards, 21 TDs, 1 Int
Chuba Hubbard-216 Rushes, 1,381 Yards, 6.4 YPC, 16 TDs
Sean Clifford-134/216 Passing, 1,931 Yards, 20 TDs, 3 Ints, 280 Rushing Yards, 3 TDs
Jonathan Taylor-177 Rushes, 1,009 Yards, 15 TDs, 143 Receiving Yards, 4 TDs
All the honorable mentions will need ENORMOUS games over the next 5 weeks to really get into the conversation. Even as a defensive player, Chase Young will most likely not get the votes that he should. These rankings are how I feel about the race, but honestly, the only 3 with a chance are Burrow, Tua, and Hurts. It’s a real shitty truth that College Football needs to fix!
