With Week 6 of the College Football season in the books, true contenders for the CFB Playoff are starting to emerge while teams we thought were contenders are starting to get theoretically eliminated from contention. There were some big games this week, and now we are at a point where pretty much every game a top 10 team plays in has playoff implications. There is also a slim chance that we have a playoff this year in which teams from only 2 conferences get in. The SEC and Big 10 currently have 8 of the 16 remaining undefeated teams in College Football. With Clemson likely to remain undefeated and the Big 12 Champion making their own case it is unlikely for all 4 teams to be from the SEC and Big 10, but it could happen. There hasn’t been much shuffle in the top of this week’s rankings, but there is plenty of shifting around at the bottom of the rankings.
*Last week’s ranking is in parentheses*
-Alabama (1)-I know the Tide have not played anyone yet, but they are winning every game by 35 points and they are not even giving opponents a chance. They will have their chance to prove themselves with match-ups against LSU and Auburn later in the season. Tua has been a top 3 QB in the country this year and he may have the best group of WRs in the entire country. This is a fast paced offense that does not take long to score. They get a tiny test this weekend with a wildly overrated Texas A&M team. Anything can happen though and we will see how Bama handles it.
-Ohio State (3)-Holy shit this defense is incredible! They have 3-4 guys who could be on NFL rosters right now. Chase Young might be the best overall football player in the country and he is most likely going to be a top 3 pick next June. He is second in the nation in sacks with 8.5 and he faces double teams on almost every single snap. He is a fucking freak. Add in 3 top 10 DBs in the nation and you have a defense comparable to Clemson’s from last year. Throw in the fact that Justin Fields is running an almost flawless offense with JK Dobbins and you have a team that is going to be extremely difficult to beat down the stretch. Fields had his first blemishes of the season throwing his first pick and losing his first fumble, but this was a real good defense and Fields still had his way for most of the game.
-Georgia (2)-For a little bit of the first quarter against an inferior Tennessee team, Georgia looked vulnerable. The defense came together to shut out the Vols in the 2nd half, but I think a problem Georgia is going to run into once the tough SEC games start is a lack of big play ability on the outside. They do not have a WR with over 200 receiving yards this season and that could come back to bite them in the ass against teams like LSU or Bama who like to throw it downfield. Georgia is still great though, and they can most definitely find a way to win those games without throwing the ball down field. They have a great OL and a great defense and they will most certainly rely on those two pieces during those big games.
-LSU (4)-Yes the Tigers scored 42 points this week, but their defense is what was most impressive about that win. They held a Utah State team that was averaging almost 40 points a game to 6 points. People were wondering if Utah St. could keep this game close with the explosive offense they have but LSU’s defense shut that thought down real quick. USU’s QB Jordan Love is getting some draft buzz and all they did was pick him off 3 times and hold him to 130 yards with 0 TDs. We will find out a whole lot more about LSU in the coming weeks though as they are about to run an absolute fucking gauntlet! Their next 4 games are at home vs. Florida, at Mississippi State, at home against Auburn, and at Alabama. LSU can essentially cement their spot in the playoff by winning all 4 of those games or they can eliminate themselves by losing 2 of them.
-Oklahoma (5)-Jalen Hurts and company came out slow and sloppy against Les Miles and the Jayhawks. They were actually losing at one point, but everything went back to normal relatively quickly. After being up 7-0 the Jayhawks did not score again until the game was already out of reach in the 4th quarter. Hurts had another Heisman like performance with 4 total TDs and now OU faces their biggest test of the season. OU can lose this game and still make a run at the playoff, but that is not how they want to do it. They want to fucking embarrass Texas! This is always one of the best games of the year and it was a fucking classic last year! The winner of this game will have pretty smooth sailing to the BIG 12 Championship game in December.
-Florida (9)-Florida got the biggest win of the week with a pretty convincing win over a real good Auburn team. Kyle Trask is looking like the real deal through a couple of starts and he has the Gators ready to make a run at the SEC Championship game. Let’s not forget about the defense though. After throwing only 1 pick through 5 games, Bo Nix threw 3 in this one, like I predicted he would. They Gator defense also sacked him twice which is pretty good considering he had only been sacked 4 times through 5 games coming into this one. Florida’s defense is legit and now the whole country knows. We will see though if they can stand up against one of the best offenses in the country when they travel to Death Valley for a season defining game against LSU.
-Wisconsin (7)-Wisconsin had another blowout win on the back of Jonathan Taylor. Jonathan Taylor scored 5 total TDs and led a rushing attack that saw 12 ball carriers rush for 350 yards. Kent St. is real shitty but Wisconsin’s defense looked awesome again shutting out the Golden Flashes and only allowing 124 total yards. The Big 10 has 4 undefeated teams but Wisconsin and OSU have separated themselves as the favorites to make a run at the playoff. They get a solid run defense in MSU at home this week, but we saw that OSU had no issues running against the Spartans so expect another HUGE dose of Jonathan Taylor.
-Clemson (8)-The Tigers had a bye this week, but that doesn’t change the fact that they almost lost to UNC. They have no tests coming up on the schedule until Wake Forest in late November. “Experts” are comparing this team to the 2016 team led by Deshaun Watson. That team also started a little slow out of the gates, but they were a lot more efficient than this current team is. They are in the top 10 in most major defensive categories, but if they let bad teams hang around too much this season, one of them will beat Clemson and essentially end their season. Let’s not forget that they still have Travis Etienne and if Trevor Lawrence turns it around this team will go right back into the top 3 because we now what this offense is capable of. It just has not shown that yet this year.
-Notre Dame (10)-The Irish had a cupcake this week in Bowling Green and did exactly what they were supposed to do which is blow them out of the fucking water. The cupcakes are over now for ND. USC comes to town this week in a rivalry game and luckily the Irish have a bye the following week otherwise this have TRAP GAME written all over it. Notre Dame travels to the Big House in 3 weeks in what will be a season defining game for them. They have to get past USC first, but it will all come down to Michigan after that. If the Irish want to keep their extremely slim chance at making the playoff alive, they need to win out and hope for some help. I think we are at a point though that no 1-loss ND team will ever get into the playoff as long as it is not in a conference.
-Texas (11)-Sam Ehlinger led the Longhorns in Morgantown and they left with a huge win. The reason this is a huge win is because WVU is solid and with OU looming next week this easily could have been a trap game for them. Sam didn’t play great but he played as good as he had to in order to get a tough road win. They are very much still alive in the playoff race because their only loss looks as good as a loss can look at this point. Their season will come down to this week though. Longhorns-Sooners in Dallas Texas. Get your fuckin popcorn ready!
-Penn State (13)-The Nittany Lions got an expected big win at home against Purdue, but it will not get any easier than this over the next 5 weeks. In succession they play Iowa on the road, Michigan at home, Michigan St. on the road, and the undefeated Minnesota Gophers on the road. Realistically they need to win 3 of those to stay alive in the Big 10 race and even if they do win 3 or even all 4 of them, their season will all come down to a road match-up with OSU in November.
-Auburn (6)-Auburn needs to run the table to have a chance at the playoff. That will be extremely tough though considering they have games left with LSU, Georgia, and Bama. If they win 2 of those games they have a shot at an NY6 bowl, but they need all 3 plus a win in the SEC Championship if they want to be in the playoff.
-Oregon (12)-The Ducks are a last second TD by Bo Nix from being in the top 7 or 8 and right in the thick of the playoff conversation. There is a tiny ray of hope but the Ducks would need a miracle to get in at this point. The goal now is to represent the Pac 12 in the Rose Bowl which will be an exciting race to watch.
-Utah (15)-The Utes will be another team from the Pac 12 vying for a spot in the Rose Bowl. The Pac 12 is still currently wide the fuck open and Utah almost controls their own destiny in reaching the Pac 12 championship game. If Utah wins out the only thing they need to happen is for USC to lose to a Pac 12 school. That will catapult the Utes into the championship game for a spot in the Rose Bowl.
-Wake Forest (19)-The Demon Deacons were on a bye this week and look to stay undefeated this week against Louisville. The schedule for them between now and Clemson is relatively light with only 1 road game. The question is if Wake Forest upsets Clemson and runs the table does the committee put them in the playoff?
-Boise State (16)-Remember this fucking name! Hank Bachmeier! He is a fucking stud and the dude is only a freshman! He has the Broncos undefeated and poised to make an NY6 bowl this year. 4 of their last 7 are true road games so we will see how far the frosh can take them.
-Michigan (25)-An ugly win against a top 15 team at home moves the Wolverines up a little bit this week. Their offense still looks like total ass and if they play like they are now against OSU they are going to get their fucking doors blown off!
-Cincinnati (UR)-The Bearcats just knocked off the class of the G5 in UCF to give them their second consecutive loss. Cincy’s only loss was a 42-0 defeat in Columbus which shows me nothing because no one has gone into Columbus and won or even been competitive for the last season and a half. This is a good football team with a solid defense and a good run game led by a veteran RB. If BSU loses, watch out for Cincy to win the AAC and represent the G5 in the NY6.
-Baylor (UR)-Baylor is coming off a huge road conference win against Kansas St. KSU was ranked last week and a lot of people though they were going to bounce back in a big way. They were dead fucking wrong and Baylor not only beat but they stomped their ass! They have some tests still to come with OkSt on the road and then back to back games against OU and Texas later in the season.
-Arizona State (20)-The Sun Devils stand pat through their bye week as they get ready for a tough conference schedule. Their only loss was by a FG to Colorado but they still have a chance to reach the Pac-12 championship game. They need to take care of business at home against Washington State before they travel to Utah for their toughest test of the season.
-Memphis (23)-They are 5-0 so far and none of the games have been particularly close outside of their season opener. What gets Memphis to 21 is that their season opener was against an SEC team. It was a bad SEC team, but an SEC team nonetheless which plenty of other G5 schools cannot claim. They can really solidify their spot in the rankings with a big road win at Temple this week.
-SMU (24)-In their first game as a ranked team in over 30 years SMU almost fucking blew it. They saved themselves with a huge 4th quarter comeback and hope to continue that magic against Temple after the bye week.
-Iowa (14)-The Hawkeyes, for the most part, looked fucking awful this week. Nate Stanley looked like a bitch when making throws leading to 3 picks. I watched Army and Wisconsin run the ball so far down Michigan’s throat Jim Harbaugh was choking on the sideline. Iowa had NO success running the ball at all! They had 1 FUCKING YARD! It was fucking pathetic! Iowa is a better football team than that and they need to show it this week at home vs. Penn State.
-Minnesota (UR)-Their 2 B1G wins have not been over the toughest opponents but they were big wins with 1 coming on the road and the other coming in a blowout. They have won every game they have played which is more than most other teams can say. We will see how the rest of their season turns out in a loaded Big 10.
-Virginia (22)-The Cavaliers are coming off of a bye and travel to Miami to try and keep pace with the other chodes in the ACC. As far as I’m concerned any one of the 7 teams from the Coastal division can make the ACC Championship and I would not be surprised. UVA is the best team in that division, but they are not that much better than the rest of the pack.
DROPPED FROM RANKINGS
Michigan State, Washington, Oklahoma State, UCF
Another great slate in Week 7 headlined by Oklahoma-Texas and Florida-LSU. Match-ups like these are sure to shuffle up my rankings next week!
